Borders Selling Low Price eBook Reader

Borders Books is taking pre-orders on a new US $150 ebook reader.  It looks like a basic eInk reader: no Wifi but I think it syncs with your computer via Bluetooth.  If you read outdoors in bright sunlight eInk screen is the way to go.  $150 is a very good price.

There are reports that Borders will release apps for iPhone, iPad and Android in June simultaneously when they start shipping the hardware reader.  All are co-branded with Kobo a Canadian ebook company.

Where to find free ebooks and how to get them on your reader

There are a lot of places to find (legal) free ebooks.  My favorite is Manybooks.net because it will let you download different formats of each book to fit different ebook reading software and hardware.

You might think that these public domain (and some creative commons) ebooks are just a lot of old junk, but it depends upon your interests.  If you dig and get creative with your searches you can dig out quite a bit of interesting old fiction and non-fiction.  For instance there are some good US Civil War, memoirs and regimental histories, World War I memoirs and histories, lots of biographies, and history in general available. There are also old religious tracts which might interest the faithful.

In fiction there are wonderful mysteries and many youth adventure stories for young readers.  And that is just scratching the surface.  The Edwardian’ s, folks from 100 years ago, had a command of written English that we can only envy today.  It would do us all good to expose ourselves to it a little more.

How to Get Your Free eBooks on Almost Any Device (Including Kindle and Nook)

So say you got a new Kindle or Nook reader, and you have found some good books on Manybooks to read, now you want to get them on your reader – How?  Fortunately Manybooks has the best help pages with simple instructions for just about any ebook reading device.

All you iPhone, iPod Touch, Kindle and Nook users should try looking for some free books to read, in rough economic times free is good. Come back and let me know what you found interesting.

Amazon Releases Kindle App for iPad

The news that Amazon has released the Kindle app for iPad just confirms my intention to buy an iPad over a dedicated ebook reader like the hardware Kindle or Barnes and Noble’s Nook.  I want to have the choice of where I buy my ebooks and what software I read them on, iPad will let me do that because it runs ebook reading and store software from many vendors: Amazon, Apple’s iBook, Barnes and Noble, eReader and many others, whereas Nook and Kindle lock me in to one proprietary bookstore.

Now I just have to figure out which iPad I want: the Wifi only version or the Wifi+3G version.

Author describes his experience with self publishing his ebook

Bill Quick describes his experiences in self publishing his novel as an ebook.

I purchased no advertising, paid no agent, and have no costs other than my time in writing the thing, and bandwidth, which I’d be paying anyway. Moreover, the entire process is automated, so after the initial several hours spent in formatting, setting up a PayPal page, and writing a download page, I do nothing but watch the money roll in.

Keep in mind that the auther is an esablished blogger with manuy daily readers and many online contacts, but still it is nice to see him break out the economics of it.

Hurricane Katrina Survivors Forum

There is a new hurricane Katrina Survivors Forum, for friends and relatives to post for information about survivors. If you will remember these bulletin boards were very helpful in collecting information about survivors in the days just after 9-11 so this is a worthy effort.

Thanks to Skaffe Directory for the good thinking on setting this up.

They claim this is like iTunes for ebooks. Prices start at 99 cents but go up from there. I let you know more tomorrow. If they can pull this off and make buying, downloading and reading ebooks a no brainer it might boost ebook popularity. No word on formats.

TeleRead: FBReader for Nokia 770

This is big. I’ve been toying with the idea of buying a Nokia 770 around Christmas. But I really want to be able to surf the web AND read ebooks on it. Now I knew the Plucker ebook software reader had been ported over to the Nokia, and I really like Plucker, but there are not enough ebook titles available in Plucker – yet, to make me want to buy the Nokia. I would have to have at least one other ebook reader available. Now it looks like the FBReader has been ported over from the Sharp Zaurus. FBReader will read HTML and TXT formats. Now that may just be enough to make me seriously look at the Nokia 770 when it comes out.

TeleRead Getting eBook Reviewer

This is great news – Teleread is getting an ebook reviewer. Somebody to review literary type ebooks.

I think this is very needed. One of the offshoots of having so many epublishing sources is the need for somebody to sort through and review the ebooks so readers can find those titles and authors they will be happy with.
